so vampire cat / wind-up bird / one am radio / xiu xiu was tonight at university of DE

i have to say. it was pretty fucking amazing. i missed vampire cat, but from what i hear i didn't miss much. the wind-up bird was mostly laptop based. he had a speaker set up in each corner of the room and sat down in the middle with his computer and mixing boxes and everyone sat in a circle around him while he sung into the 20 minute long drone thing he was doing. it was pretty awesome for a laptop performance. the sound was just swelling and sweeping all around the room and kept getting more and more chaotic as it went on.

one am radio came on next and were also really good. everyone sat down for the set. i didn't really want to, but i didn't want to be a dousche bag standing up in front while everyone else couldn't see. they didn't play "what you gave away" though, and that might be one of my favorite songs.

xiu xiu wasn't quite as intense as i had expected. i thought Jamie would be insane, but he's generally a pretty normal guy. a little crazy, but not even half as insane as he sounds on recordings. he had a girl playing with him, and freddy rupert doing his merch. freddy rupert is the kid that does This Song Is A Mess, But So Am I and is pretty much an awesome kid. apparently it was his 17th birthday and everyone sung to him. sadly, Xiu Xiu didn't play "apistat commander" or "i love the valley, OH!" the stuff from the upcomming album sounds really good though. not as abstract as everything else he's done. there were these two guys standing next to me that i wanted to strangle. Jamie pulled out an auto-harp while he was setting up and then for the next 15 minutes, i swear, their conversation went something like: "autoharp? autoharp! AUTOHARP!! autoharp? he had better play that autoharp. autoharp." no, jackass, he brings autoharps on tour so dumbass kids can freak out about it.

the burning question: where was sarah?

<lj:music>explosions in the sky - the earth is not a cold, dead place</lj:music>

so i just started my christmas shopping today. i did decent.

the realiter called at 2:00, waking me up, telling me i was accepted for my apartment. she gave some details, i scribbled some down, then laid back down until 2:45 or so. when i was finally motivated to get up, i went to the living room and found dad had given me and my sister money to go christmas shopping. i figured it was time to get off my ass and do something.

first i went to depford's best buy to get a couple things. i got all i came to get except for one cd. so i went to the mall to go to sam goody and the line was wrapped around the store, blocking most of the cds, so i couldn't even get to the section that i was looking for. i said screw it and left, stopping at the candy store for my first meal of the day - reese's cups, oompas, and bottle caps.

then, i went to barnes and noble, just because i didn't really feel like going home yet. i started looking for these two graphic novels, but i didn't know exactly what they were called. (Blankets by Craig Thompson, and Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware)

so i left B&N and went home to look up those books. i left and went to Borders in DE to look for that cd and the books. the cd wasn't there, so i browsed the books. i couldn't find the Jimmy Corrigan one, but i found Blankets right away. I almost didn't get it, because it was $30. I picked it up, grabbed a latte, and read some of it. suddenly, i was on page 50 and was like "wow, i guess i'm going to go buy it" so i did, came home and then read the rest of it. it is 582 pages long. it doesn't take that long to read though, since it's like a big comic book. easily one of the greatest things i have ever read. i'm probably going to read it again before i go to bed, and then probably again saturday at the punk rock flea market if i get bored

i think that's about all the information i care to divulge at this time, but suffice it to say it has not been the best week.

so i just got back from the wolf eyes show. it was posibly the greatest show ever. but it was a long journy getting there.

we start off with me assuming that it is at the first unitarian church, like any normal r5 show. i get there, look around, and there's street punks everywhere. I had never heard buck-65 and thought "maybe they're a street punk band" because i'm a fucking retard. so i call ciarra, who turned down going to this show with me, and asked if she was anywhere near a computer, to see if i had the right day. she wasn't, but she was with cindy who told me i was at an Unseen/some other punk band show. She told me it was in cherry hill. so i was like "what?" so i asked where they were and they were eating or something. so i was like "i guess i'm just going to turn around and go home then" and she said "okay"

so i'm walking back to my car and i'm like "why don't i go to spaceboy and ask one of the dudes working there for directions. so i drive from north philly to south philly, park, the whole ordeal takes me like, 30-40 minutes. dude told me where to go, and i get there - it's like 3 blocks from the troc. which is a lot further north than south street. by this time i'm like "fuck parking" and park at the garage near the troc. i'm wandering around trying to find this place and these scene girls ride by on their bike. so i'm like "they have to be going to the show". so i stalk them and sure enough, they were. it was in the 4th floor of this building and it was awesome. kind of like where the dudes in S.L.C. punk lived. a big empty run down area. artsy fartsy. i get there halfway through the fisrt band's set. they were decent, they finished, and some noise band came on. they were awesome, but i don't know who they were.

after them, Rubber-O-Cement came on. This is where it gets good. this dude was dressed up like a fucking dragon or something, playing an instrument he had to have made. it looked like if you folded up a thing you paint on (i forget what it's called), put bass strings on it, and put some wierd thing with knobs below the strings. i don't know. so this dude in a dragon suit starts flailing around making his noise, and i seriously feared for my saftey. his instrument was a good 6 feet long and he was just swinging it randomly. the whole floor cleared out for him. eventually he tripped/kicked over this bench and shit broke so he slammed his instrument on the floor and plowed through the crowd, never to be seen again.

buck-65 was up next. good hip-hop. not much more to say.

wolf eyes came on, and the dudes were insane. i only stayed for the first 1/3 of their set though, because i had to get home. i don't even know what they were doing to make what they were making. i recognized like, two pieces of equipment, not including the gong, sheet of steel to bang on, sax, and a guitar.

so in the end, i learned that noise isn't for people who can't make real music. these guys know exactly what they're doing, and it changes my whole perspective on this genre of music.

An open letter to the members of Yo La Tengo

Dear Yo La Tengo,

After attending your show last night in Philly, a few issues came up, making you the worst band i have ever seen live. The first issue is the $15 ticket. The show was in the sanctuary - it could be very easy to say it cost more to rent it out, but Mum played there a few months ago with three other bands and had to buy a plane ticket from Iceland and they only charged $12. Lame. The next is the fact that I payed $15 for one, and only one band. Lame. Oh yeah, you had a shitty ass comedian come on while you were taking a break from that intense music you were playing. Lame. Two guys in sequin robes playing trombone and flute? What? The ticket said 7:30 PM. We ended up standing in line at 8:30, and you didn't even go on until 9:30. Lame. At about 10:00, a half hour into your set i was going to leave and go to wawa to get a drink, since i have a cold and my throat was sore. No re-entry. Oh yeah, you're selling water and coffee. Way to go, capitalist. "Buy Yo La Tengo or go home." Politics - don't say voter volunteer information "just so happens to be sitting next to your cds." You put it there, say so. I'm pretty sure that sums up all of my issues involving your live performance.

Sincerely,
Ryan

P.S. While we were waiting for you to play, i went downstairs to the bathroom. I looked around and noticed a lot of people and a girl band on stage.
